Why a church should tell you what it believes — in writing.
“No creed but the Bible” sounds humble. In practice it means: we have a creed, we just are not going to show it to you. Every church interprets Scripture. A confessional church puts its interpretation on the table where you can examine it, hold it up against the Bible, and hold its leaders accountable to it.
Confessions are not a second Bible. They stand under Scripture, not beside it. They are the church's public answer to the question, “What do you understand the Word of God to teach?”
Our standards
- The Westminster Confession of Faith (1646)
- The Westminster Larger and Shorter Catechisms
We also hold in warm agreement the Three Forms of Unity — the Belgic Confession, the Heidelberg Catechism, and the Canons of Dort — and we regularly use the Heidelberg Catechism in worship.
The ecumenical creeds
With the whole historic Christian church we confess the Apostles' Creed, the Nicene Creed, the Athanasian Creed, and the Definition of Chalcedon.
Why the catechisms matter here
We use the Shorter Catechism and the Heidelberg Catechism in worship, in both languages, aimed at our children. A child who can answer “What is the chief end of man?” has a frame that will hold a lifetime of Scripture. Catechism is not rote memorization for its own sake — it is scaffolding for understanding.
